Do I need a bun maker for this hairstyle?
I used a bun maker for this hairstyle but no, you can create this hairstyle without a bun maker, especially if you have a lot of hair (thicker hair types work well without the bun maker) and/or if you tease your hair a lot.
I paired fuchsia with red and it works when the hair clip ties the two colors together
Where to buy bun makers:
Donut Bun Maker Kit for Light Hair Colors ($8.99, Amazon)
Various Bun Maker Kit for Dark Hair Colors (other hair color options are in this set, $6.99, get it on Amazon)
Donut Bun Maker Kit for Dark Hair ($8.59, Walmart)
Light and Dark Bun Maker Kit (25 pieces, $2.44, Temu)
I’ve used a bun maker to create several hairstyles like the video tutorials below or you can see them here in this article:
I have many hair tutorials on my website, but you can also find more wedding guest hairstyle ideas at Vogue.com. There are many cute hairstyles for all different lengths here at brides.com.

How to Create a Claw Clip Orchid Wedding Guest Hairstyle:
First, create a ballerina style bun. When I was young, I danced and a bun hair style was very popular to keep my long hair out of my face, which is what I also want when I’m dancing at a wedding!
The back view of the hairstyle
Adding the sponge bun maker helps make the simple ballerina bun bigger and more voluminous, but as I said earlier, you can just tease your hair more if you don’t want to use a bun maker. This is a great “rainy day” hairstyle because your hair won’t frizz out!
I like a boar bristle hairbrush for bun hairstyles
For this style, first brush your hair out. Use dry shampoo at your roots if you are working with clean hair (it creates grip, meaning better hold) or if your roots are greasy. I used a Spornette Boar Bristle brush for this style. This brush is also good for smoothing lumps and bumps as you pull your hair into a ponytail.
I love Viori dry shampoo
Dry Shampoos I like:
Not Your Mother’s Plump for Joy (adds lots of volume, get it on Amazon or Walmart)
Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Dry Shampoo (adds texture, get it on Amazon or Walmart)
Viori Vanilla Coconut (I LOVE this clay and rice based natural dry shampoo and you can grab it at a 10% discount using code CAROLYNBRADEN or use this link to Viori’s website)
Brush out the dry shampoo and pull your hair into a high ponytail and secure it with a ponytail holder. I created this on 3rd day hair, which again, helps have more grip.
I like taming flyaways with Braid Balm
I slicked back flyaways with Braid Balm. It smells so good and is really, really effective.
I added a donut bun maker
I slipped a larger sponge bun maker onto my ponytail and I slid it all the way down to my ponytail holder. I teased the ponytail with a teasing brush. I wrapped (in a swirling motion) all my hair around the bun. I slid u-shaped pins (I like Magic Grip hair pins from Amazon) into the base of the bun to hold my hair.
Teasing your hair a bit adds volume
I added enough until my style stayed, then sprayed it a little with some hairspray, which I get here at Target.
Adding the claw clip
Lastly, I added an orchid adorned claw clip on the side of the bun. I got mine on Temu a while ago, but Amazon has some similar orchid clips. You can also find flower hair clips at Walmart. You can also add real flowers!
I like Kristin Ess Finishing Spray
